Why would we continue to make pennies and nickels that cost more to produce than they’re worth?

How Herd Immunity Works (and Why Anti-Vaccination Is Dangerous)

I can’t believe how many people I know that have refused to vaccinate their kids. Then they wonder why I can’t visit, not without wearing a mask anyway, and I have no intention of putting myself in such a position. I prefer not to associate with complete morons anyway.

Three Rotations in Three Temperatures

Solar images in three different wavelengths in extreme ultraviolet light are combined together to show solar activity over almost three months (June 2 — Aug. 26, 2010). Each wavelength is shown in a different color. The wavelengths are at 211 (red – 2 million degrees), 193 (green – 1.3 million degrees), and 171 Angstroms (blue – 600,000 degrees). The cadence is basically a frame every 45 minutes. The brightest areas are active regions, which have stronger magnetic field than the surrounding area.

Nikola Tesla (Serbian: ?????? ?????; 10 July 1856 — 7 January 1943) was an inventor, mechanical engineer, and electrical engineer. He was an important contributor to the birth of commercial electricity, and is best known for his many revolutionary developments in the field of electromagnetism in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Tesla’s patents and theoretical work formed the basis of modern alternating current (AC) electric power systems, including the polyphase system of electrical distribution and the AC motor. This work helped usher in the Second Industrial Revolution.

A Milky Way Shadow at Loch Ard Gorge

Posted by nyokki On August - 24 - 2010

mwshadow cherney big1 500x333 A Milky Way Shadow at Loch Ard Gorge

Explanation: Have you ever seen the Milky Way’s glow create shadows? To do so, conditions need to be just right. First and foremost, the sky must be relatively clear of clouds so that the long band of the Milky Way’s central disk can be seen. The surroundings must be very near to completely dark, with no bright artificial lights visible anywhere. Next, the Moon cannot be anywhere above the horizon, or its glow will dominate the landscape. Last, the shadows can best be caught on long camera exposures. In the above image taken in Port Campbell National Park, Victoria, Australia, seven 15-second images of the ground and de-rotated sky were digitally added to bring up the needed light and detail. In the foreground lies Loch Ard Gorge, named after a ship that tragically ran aground in 1878. The two rocks pictured are the remnants of a collapsed arch and are named Tom and Eva after the only two people who survived that Loch Ard ship wreck. A close inspection of the water just before the rocks will show reflections and shadows in light thrown by our Milky Way galaxy. Low clouds are visible moving through the serene scene in this movie.

PROMISCUITY BREEDS BETTER KIDS

Posted by nyokki On August - 13 - 2010

Science has shown this with birds, and now with fruit flies: The girls who play the field leave a more impressive legacy of children when they exit the game of life. Promiscuity pays.
773px Jealousy and Flirtation1 499x388 PROMISCUITY BREEDS BETTER KIDS
This simple experiment set female flies up in three lifestyles.

The first group of ladies each had access to a male for only as long as it took them to mate.

The second group were married off for life to a single male.

The third group were presented with an intriguing new stranger every day of their life.

The one-night stand girls laid the fewest eggs, and raised the fewest children.

The mated-for-life girls laid many more eggs, but many of them didn’t hatch, or died in childhood.

The promiscuous flies found the sweet spot. They laid fewer eggs than the mated-for-life girls, but a higher percentage of their eggs went on to mature into healthy adults.

Why? How? We’re just beginning to get hints that a GREAT DEAL OF MATING happens after the sperm are dumped off. The deed is far from done. The female reproductive system — presumably in all species — is an active judge of sperm quality. Some animals can reject the entire deposit. Others can store one deposit as a backup, then continue to shop around. How flies sort through their options — and how humans do, as well — is still a mystery.

But increasingly, we understand why promiscuity is some (sic) common. In the race to produce the most, best children, it’s a winning strategy.

I can’t remember where I read it, but the statistic said that 25% of babies are not from the acknowledged mate/father in nearly all animals, especially birds and mammals.

Strippers Protest Church That Protests Them

Posted by nyokki On August - 9 - 2010

Posted by nyokki

WARSAW, Ohio — Strip-club owner Tommy George rolled up to the church in his grabber-orange Dodge Challenger, drinking a Mountain Dew at 9 in the morning and smoking a cigarette he had just rolled himself.

Pastor Bill Dunfee stepped out of a tan Nissan Murano, clutching a Bible in one hand and his sermon in the other, a touch of spray holding his perfectly coiffed ‘do in place.

Inside the New Beginnings Ministries church, Dunfee’s worshippers wore polyester and pearls.

Outside, George’s strippers wore bikinis and belly rings.

Both men agree it is classic sinners vs. saints. But George says it is up to America to decide which is which and who is who.

Dunfee says God already has chosen.

The battle that has heretofore played out in the parking lot of George’s strip club – the Foxhole, a run-down, garage-like building at a Coshocton County crossroads called Newcastle – has shifted 7 miles east to Church Street.

Every weekend for the last four years, Dunfee and members of his ministry have stood watch over George’s joint, taking up residence in the right of way with signs, video cameras and bullhorns in hand. They videotape customers’ license plates and post them online, and they try to save the souls of anyone who comes and goes.

Now, the dancers have turned the tables, so to speak. Fed up with the tactics of Dunfee and his flock, they say they have finally accepted his constant invitation to come to church.

It’s just that they’ve come wearing see-through shorts and toting Super Soakers.

They bring lawn chairs and – yesterday, anyway – grilled hamburgers, Monster energy drinks and corn on the cob.

They sat in front of the church and waved at passing cars but largely ignored the congregation behind them.

“They’re just mad,” he (George) said, “because their wives won’t let them come to my club.”

Surfing the 4th Dimension from Don Whitaker on Vimeo.

Further experiments in slit-scan style video, sometimes called time slicing. I like to think that this is what you might see if you looked at our world from a spot in the fourth dimension. (^_^)

These clips start as normal video clips that I’ve captured along the Oregon Coast. Then I run ‘em through a script that I wrote in Processing.

The script works by taking a vertical sliver of pixels from the source video, advancing the video one frame, grabbing another sliver of pixels, and so on through the entire source clip.

These slivers are then stacked horizontally to create one frame of the final clip. The animation effect is created by advancing the location of the vertical slice and repeating the stacking process.

So each frame of the final clip represents the change over time of a stationary spot. As the video advances, the spot we are seeing moves through space. Normally as a video advances we move through time, so we’ve sort of swapped the two.

12th and Delaware

Posted by nyokki On August - 4 - 2010

Posted by nyokki

I caught this on HBO last night and, once again, the film makers scared and worried me. It follows a group of Right to Lifers as they protest an abortion clinic. They’ve set up a clinic directly across from the abortion clinic. They approach women (usually young girls) and tell them that they’re the place that can give you advice and care on all aspects of your pregnancy, including abortion. They don’t tell the girls that they neither perform, advocate nor refer abortions. These girls think they’re going to an abortion clinic, only to be ambushed by pro-lifers. Most of the time I can ignore the more fundamentalist and evangelical ramblings of the Christian Right. Jesus Camp and this film really upsets me though. They’re deceitful, rude (no big deal to some, but it bothers me), bullies and downright despicable.

A Dog and an Orangutan

Posted by nyokki On August - 3 - 2010

After losing his parents, this 3 year old orangutan was so depressed he wouldn’t eat and didn’t respond to any medical treatments. The veterinarians thought he would surely die from sadness. The zoo keepers found an old sick dog on the grounds in the park at the zoo where the orangutan lived and took the dog to the animal treatment center. The dog arrived at the same time the orangutan was there being treated. The two lost souls met and have been inseparable ever since.
1 A Dog and an Orangutan
The orangutan found a new reason to live and each always tries his best to be a good companion to his new found friend. They are together 24 hours a day in all their activities.

They live in Northern California where swimming is their favorite pass time, although Roscoe (the orangutan) is a little afraid of the water and needs his friend’s help to swim.

I hope this is true, but with emails…prolly not. *sigh*
