Authorities on Monday released the name of a Modesto man who police shot and killed over the weekend after spotting him wielding a samurai sword.
Officer Latisha Leap shot Richard Phillip Robles, 45, as he brandished a two- to three-foot-long sword outside a Doubletree Hotel shortly after 5 a.m., Modesto Police Sgt. Brian Findlen said Monday.
Robles was taken to the hospital and died about an hour later.
Robles had been taking medication for mental health problems but wasn\’t a violent person, according to his mother, Polly Robles. She said she didn\’t know why he confronted police with the sword.
Officers are trained to consider suspects armed with pointed objects a serious threat because their protective vests aren\’t knife-proof, Findlen said.
Further proof that studying swords and how to defend yourself from them is still relevant. Officers shot this guy because their vests are not knife (sword) proof, in self defense. Hilarious except for the crazy guy dieing of course.[youtube:enter youtube url here]
