Menifee school officials remove dictionary over term ‘oral sex’

After a parent complained about an elementary school student stumbling across “oral sex” in a classroom dictionary, Menifee Union School District officials decided to pull Merriam Webster’s 10th edition from all school shelves earlier this week.

School officials will review the dictionary to decide if it should be permanently banned because of the “sexually graphic” entry, said district spokeswoman Betti Cadmus. The dictionaries were initially purchased a few years ago for fourth- and fifth-grade classrooms districtwide, according to a memo to the superintendent.

“It’s just not age appropriate,”

said Cadmus, adding that this is the first time a book has been removed from classrooms throughout the district.

other dictionary entries defining human anatomy would probably not be cause for alarm.

“Censorship in the schools, really? Pretty soon the only dictionary in the school library will be the Bert and Ernie dictionary,”

said Emanuel Chavez, the parent of second- and sixth-grade students.

“If the kids are exposed to it, it’s up to the parents to explain it to them at their level.”

Uh…wow. It’s embarrassing that this goes on. I understand the concern, but seriously, no other way to handle this? I was one of those kids that looked up every “dirty word” I could think of in the huge dictionary in my school’s library. Somehow I wasn’t harmed in any way after doing so.

  1. When I was in 5th grade we had a sexual awareness class in which all us boys and girls laughed and learned about sexuality. I cannot believe I still remember it, but it was a special day of sorts I suppose. I imagine they have them all over the country at this age or not because people are stupidly prude here. The point being that this stuff is around kids no matter what, especially with the internet and mass technology use. This is ridiculous.

Next we will be burning history books.
