Coastguards filmed the eruption, recording that the smoke reached 100 metres in the air, turning the surrounding ocean a yellow-green colour.
The volcano, called Fukutoku-Okanoba, is located five kilometres northeast of the island of South Iwo Jima.
According to Japan’s meteorological agency, it was first recorded in 1904 and has since erupted seven times.
Three of the eruptions generated islands, but all them eventually succumbed to the sea.
